GREAT LAKES DECLARATION :
SUMMIT ON A MINE FREE WORLD : NEPAD II:

Leaders of the Great Lakes region of Africa have signed a Declaration committing themselves to peace in the region. But does of this mean that peace is finally coming to this troubled area?

KOFI ANNAN
"Leaders have shown real commitment in signing this Declaration. But the real test starts now, as they turn to designing the framework for the implementation phase."

Nairobi, Kenya will be host to leaders from around the world who are meeting next week to review progress in implementing the Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel landmines. But has there really been any progress in eliminating this cheap deadly weapon?

WOLFANG PETRITSCH
"What is success story is that so far within a period of five years 143 states have joined the landmine treaty and have banned altogether landmines from their territory"

And for Africa to successfully implement its programme for economic development or NEPAD, it needs cooperation from the developed countries to which it continues to pay huge amounts of debt.

IBRAHIM GAMBARI
"What the Africans would like to see is free trade and easy access to the markets of developed countries in the export of products in which they are competitive."
