COTE D'IVOIRE: CHAOS AND MORE INSTABILITY AS NINE FRENCH SOLDIERS ARE KILLED AND THE FRENCH DESTROY THE IVORIAN AIRFORCE FLEET, AND
AN EYEWITNESS REPORT ON THE DEVASTATION CAUSED BY LOCUSTS IN A SENEGALESE VILLAGE

Cote D'Ivoire remains in deep crisis with anti-French feeling running high in Abidjan. French troops destroy the entire fleet of the Ivorian air-force after nine French soldiers were killed. The French Envoy to the UN, Jean-Marc de La Sabliere, defends his country's action:
"It was a deliberate act against our camp and the decision taken by President Chirac to destroy the Ivorian aircraft has been supported widely."

But the Ivorian envoy to the UN, Philippe Djangone-Bi, disagrees and says a French-sponsored Security Council resolution threatening sanctions is uncalled-for:
"We are not a failed state. The Ivorian government functions properly. There is no chaos at all. So there is no need in the first place to have such a tough sanction. This is good for failed states."

: BAD TO WORSE

West Africa is thrown into fresh crisis after the government of Cote D’Ivoire launched a fresh offensive against the rebels in the north.
The situation in Sudan’s Darfur Region moves from bad to worse, and the UN’s top envoy on the ground, Jan Pronk, says it’s not just the government that’s to blame:
" The humanitarian assistance is increasingly being hampered not by the government, but by the rebels because they are closing roads, they are stopping food transport.”
