AFRICA AT THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY:
DARFUR, SECURITY COUNCIL REFORM AND PEACEKEEPING DOMINATE THE SPEECHES

At the General Assembly Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa launches his country's bid for a seat on the UN Security Council.

President Olusegun Obasanjo also wants a seat for Nigeria.

And Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe says Africa should take the lead in resolving the Darfur crisis.
"The Africans should participate more, so we avoid all these nonsensical talk about some other powers wanting to send forces from Europe or elsewhere, " he said.

Plus, the last General Assembly attendance for two elder African statesmen.
