THE 59TH UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY OPENS IN NEW YORK, WITH MORE THAN A HUNDRED WORLD LEADERS EXPECTED TO ATTEND
BUT WHY CARE ABOUT UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY?

More than a hundred world leaders are attending this year's General Debate of United Nations General Assembly. But what exactly is the General Assembly or GA? "... you could compare it to a world parliament," says outgoing Spokesperson, Michelle Montas.

We look at the differences between the General Assembly and the Security Council. .We also examine how the GA's work has affected Africa in the past. "The General Assembly has played a very important role in the decolonisation of Africa," says UN Assistant Secretary-General, Tuliameni Kalomoh.

And we explore what Africa could expect from the incoming President of the GA, Jean Ping, Foreign Minister of Gabon, (pictured right.)
