SECURITY COUNCIL HOLDS DARFUR MEETING
AS DEADLINE FOR SUDAN GOVERNMENT ACTION ENDS

The UN's top man's on the ground in Sudan, Jan Pronk, delivers his verdict as the Security Council's deadline for the Sudanese government action in Darfur expires.

"The humanitarian situation in Darfur is still bleak. There are major gaps in the provision of food, water and sanitation."

But the Sudanese Ambassador to the UN, Elfatih Mohammed Ahmed Erwa, insists his government has done enough to meet the UN Security Council requirements.
"We have done lots of things, I could believe we have secured the necessary places by 90 per cent. "

US envoy to the UN, John Danforth, says the Khartoum government is still attacking civilians in Darfur.

Plus the abduction and subsequent release of some WFP and Red Crescent workers in Darfur - what are the implications for relief work?
