In this maiden edition of UN and Africa, the UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, speaks about the current humanitarian crisis in Darfur, Western Sudan, and describes it as “extremely worrying.”

He warns that unless the situation in Darfur is dealt with, any peace in Sudan “is going to be a fragile peace.”  He also calls on UN member states to take action: “We should avoid the situations where we allow member states to hide behind the Secretary-General, use him as an alibi for their own inaction.”

On the unstable security situation in the DR Congo, Mr. Annan says he has been speaking to leaders in the region and warns about the consequences of renewed conflict. “If we are not able to stabilize and the Congo were to revert back into violence or anarchy the whole region will pay a price. And this is why we are focusing so much attention on this issue.”
