World Food Programme Feeds Record 110 Million People in 2003 - However Desperately Needs Funds to Feed 800 Million Critically Hungry

The World Food Programme has fed a record 110 million people in 2003 - the highest number in its 40-year history. Even so, today it does not have sufficient funds to feed the ever increasing numbers of the chronically hungry. Lena Yacoumopoulou has the story:

Personal Contributions From UN Staff Members Finance Small Projects

For over twenty five years individual staff members at the United Nations have been giving one per cent of their salaries to meet the basic needs of local groups and village communities in countries around the world. Their contributions are managed under the UN Staff One percent for Development Fund, which only finances very small projects that have difficulty in receiving help from other development agencies. One hundred percent of the money contributed goes directly to the projects because the Fund operates completely on a volunteer basis. Michael Cassandra heads the one percent Fund and likes to be called the Convenor, because the Fund operates through twice yearly meetings where members discuss and approve the projects they would like to support:
