UN Secretary-General Welcomes Resolution Crisis in Najaf

The UN Secretary-General has welcomed the efforts by Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani to find a peaceful solution to the situation in Najaf. He says he's encouraged by reports that an agreement to end armed hostilities in Najaf has been reached. In a statement through his spokesman, the Secretary-General voices his great dismay at violent incidents on Thursday in Kufa and other locations. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

"The Secretary-General reiterates that the United Nations stands ready to assist Iraqis in the transitional political process, and calls upon them to resolve their differences through peaceful means."

The Secretary-General expresses concern over the humanitarian situation created as a result of the recent hostilities in Iraq.

UN Is Concerned About Palestinian Hunger Strikers

Thirteen UN agencies operating in the occupied Palestinian territories have expressed concern about the hunger strike which has been joined by close to 3,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees. The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East peace process has called on the Israeli authorities to comply with their international obligations and make every effort to find an appropriate resolution to the hunger strike. The Palestinians are protesting against prison conditions and want improved visiting rights.

UNHCR Relocates Congolese Refugees in Burundi

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has begun an information campaign on the relocation of refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo who are in Burundi. The agency says many refugees, particularly those from the Gatumba camp where more than 150 died in an attack earlier this month, are reluctant to relocate. UNHCR spokesperson Jennifer Pagonis says the refugees want to return to their country as soon as the situation is safe.

"This is especially the case among the refugees who are still deeply affected by the attack and others are anxious about security at the new sites. Many families have relatives in hospitals and want to stay close to their loved ones."

UNHCR has moved a group of 48 Congolese refugees away from the insecure border area between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi to a camp in the northeast of the country.

Eritrean Deportees from Libya Hijack Plane to Sudan

Eritrean deportees from Libya today hijacked a chartered plane from Libya and diverted it to Sudan. The United Nations refugee agency was asked to establish contact with the hijackers after the plane landed Friday afternoon. The Director of the UN refugee agency's operations in Sudan and Chad, Jean Marie Fakhouri, told journalists in Geneva that the highjacking has created difficulties in helping the Eritrean deportees.

"Hijacking is considered by UNHCR as a criminal act that would lead to exclusion from refugee status. But we do still need to have a better understanding as to the situation itself, the conditions of that deportation."

The hijacking ended after the Eritrean deportees surrendered to the Sudanese authorities.

UN Asks for $166 Million to Assist Refugees in Chad

The United Nations is appealing to the international community for more than $160 million to address humanitarian needs in Chad until the end of the year. An initial appeal for $54 million was made in March.
So far contributions and pledges are almost half of the revised requirements. The needs of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees have increased dramatically because of the large number of refugees fleeing Darfur to Chad from over 100,000 in March to 200,000 at the end of July.

IOM Helps Abducted Ugandan Children Return Home

The International Organization for Migration, IOM, is helping a group of 45 Ugandan children who have been abducted by rebels in northern Uganda to return home. The children have been rescued by the Ugandan army and handed over to the UN Children's Fund. IOM spokesperson in Geneva, Niurka Pinero says more children are being turned over following an agreement between Uganda and Sudan allowing the army to chase the rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army into Sudan.

"More children are being liberated, more are escaping but some of them are badly injured in this fighting and today four of them in the same plane, they are air lifted but in stretchers."

The children are being flown from Juba in southern Sudan to Gulu in Uganda.
