UN Missions Concerned about Volatile Situation along Congo/Burundi Border

The UN missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Burundi are expressing concern about the volatile situation along their common border and taking all possible pre-emptive measures to avert a major crisis. This follows the weekend massacre of more than 150 Congolese refugees at a camp in Burundi. A UN spokesman says the Under Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Marie Gueheno briefed the Secretary-General in detail about the situation in the region. And he's expected to brief the UN Security Council Thursday. Meanwhile, on the ground in Burundi, spokeswoman for the UN mission in Burundi, Isabrelle Abric, says the mission is working on security with the authorities in Burundi:

" We obviously increased our patrol, we have redeployed some of our troops in this areas. We are of course in coordination with MONUC, on both sides of the border."

MONUC is the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

UN Special Envoy Discusses Situation in Najaf with Iraqi President

In Iraq, UN Special Envoy Jihangir Qazi met Iraqi President Ghazi al Yawer Wednesday with whom he discussed a number of issues, including the ongoing national conference and the situation in Najaf. Qazi reiterated the Secretary-General's concern regarding the deteriorating situation in that holy city and expressed hope that a peaceful solution would end the crisis there. Qazi also met with a number of Iraqi personalities attending the national conference representing several regions.

Sudan to Outline Actions to be Taken Under Darfur Plan of Action

Sudan's foreign minister is expected to present details of further actions to be taken by his government to meet its commitments under the Darfur Plan of Action, when the committee established to monitor implementation of the agreement meets Thursday. A UN spokesman says he's also expected to present a list of Janjaweed militia over which the government has influence. According to the Darfur Plan of Action, these militia are to be instructed by the government to cease their activities immediately and lay down their weapons.

Aid Agencies Getting More Access to Darfur: UNICEF

The Sudanese Government is allowing aid agencies more access in the Darfur area. That according to the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF). But they still face some constraints as a result of insecurity and heavy rains.
UNICEF Communications Officer Sacha Westerbeek says there is improvement in the provision of water, sanitation, medical assistance to internally displaced people in the camps and schooling for children:

" UNICEF has a huge programme and really, every single day there is a school or classroom built in Darfur and new kids can go to school. And this is really amazing."

Ms. Westerbeek says there's a definite change in the children's lives when they are able to go to school.

Annan Calls for Release of Myanmar's Opposition Leader

There's been a call for the immediate release of Myanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. And Secretary-General Kofi Annan has urged the government to show a commitment to democracy. In a statement, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric says the Secretary-General believes that unless and until the views of the National League for Democracy (NLD) and other political parties are sought and considered, Myanmar's National Convention and the Road Map process will be incomplete, lacking in credibility and unable to gain the support of the international community:

" As a first step towards democratization and national reconciliation in Myanmar, the Secretary-General calls on the State Peace and DevelopmentCouncil (SPDC) to make full use of the national convention's adjournment by immediately releasing Daw Aug San Suu Kyi and engaging the NLD and other political parties in a substantive dialogue on how they can work together for the benefit of the people of Myanmar."

The spokesman says it is the Secretary-General's judgment that the National Convention in Myanmar does not currently adhere to the recommendations made by successive resolutions of the General Assembly.

Annan Calls for Urgent Increase in International Forces in Afghanistan

Secretary-General Kofi Annan has called for an urgent increase in international forces in Afghanistan to address the deteriorating security situation there. In a new report to the Security Council, Annan says he's encouraged by NATO's decision to make more troops available there, hopefully, well ahead of the presidential elections. The Secretary-General says Afghanistan has experienced a heightening of the challenges posed by the three main threats to peace and stability there, namely: extremist violence, factionalism and the drug trade.
