"We are at the moment trying to define where such substantial progress could take place which would imply then, concrete activities by the government of Sudan, also with regard to disarming those parts of janjaweed which have aligned with the government of the Sudan, complete activities to step up possibilities of the police in order to contain the other militias which are outside the control of the government of Sudan."

Mr. Pronk says the United Nations is concentrating on political talks scheduled to begin shortly between the government of Sudan and the rebel movements. He says this should bring about peace as soon as possible and reduce insecurity from the activities of the rebels.
