BOMB BLAST RIPS THROUGH UN HEADQUARTERS IN BAGHDAD

(August 19, 2003)

A bomb explosion tore through part of the United Nations Headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, today killing at least 17 people including the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. A hundred people are estimated to have been wounded in the blast. The attack happened when a bomb explosion was set off in a truck parked outside the Canal Hotel, which houses the United Nations Headquarters. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan denounced the bombing as an inexcusable "act of unprovoked and murderous violence."
