Address: United Nations, New York, New York 10017, USA

The United Nations Headquarters is located in Manhattan, New York City, and covers approximately eighteen acres, from 42nd to 48th Streets between First Avenue and the East River. The site was donated to the United Nations by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Construction on the buildings began on October 24, 1949.

The United Nations Headquarters site is officially international territory, not part of the United States. Among the buildings on the premises are the 550-foot tall, 29-story Secretariat Building, the 380-foot long and 160-foot wide General Assembly building topped with a shallow dome and the Dag Hammarskjold Library.

Wallace K. Harrison of the United States was appointed chief architect, with the title of Director of Planning. To assist him, a 10-member Board of Design Consultants was selected, composed of architects nominated by Governments. The members of the Board were Nikolai D. Bassov (Soviet Union), Gaston Brunfaut (Belgium), Ernest Cormier (Canada), Charles E. Le Corbusier (France), Liang Seu-cheng (China), Sven Markelius (Sweden), Oscar Niemayer (Brazil), Howard Robertson (United Kingdom), G.A. Soilleux (Australia) and Julio Vilamajo (Uruguay).
