East Timor


Secretary-General Kofi Annan visited East Timor on February 15-16, 2000. The visit was part of his official trip to Asia and the Pacific. The following are highlights of that visit in East Timor:

Secretary-General Kofi Annan visited Liquica, a town which has been called the "killing field" of East Timor after a wave of murders and destruction by the militia that followed last year's vote for independence. At an emotional wreath-laying ceremony at the site of a massacre at a village church, the Secretary-General was embraced by family members of the victims. (UN Photo# EDD181)
