SECRETARY-GENERAL ATTENDS VIGIL FOR SERGIO VIEIRA DE MELLO
IN RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

Secretary-General Kofi Annan attended a vigil held today for Sergio Vieira de Mello, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, who was killed in the August 19th bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad. The vigil was held at Palácio da Cidade, City Palace in Rio de Janeiro City, Brazil.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan, speaking at the vigil, paid tribute to his envoy for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, killed earlier this week in a massive terrorist bombing, by vowing to honour his dying wish that the UN complete its mission in the war-ravaged nation.
