UN photos may be used to further the aims and work of the United Nations. They cannot be used for advertising, marketing or in ways which are inconsistent with the Organization’s mission.
UN photos cannot be altered, sold, redistributed or used to create derivative works.
COPYRIGHT
United Nations photographs are the property of the United Nations, which holds all rights in connection with their usage.
PERMISSION
Prior written permission is required to reproduce UN photos in print or electronic format, including CDs, DVDs, web sites, videos, exhibits, etc.
Such permissions are granted on a one-time non-exclusive basis and may be renewed.
Written permission is, however, not required for reproduction of photo material as allowed by statutory exemptions (e.g. UN-affiliated non-governmental organizations and United Nations Associations, UN system organizations, including Specialized Agencies) or Fair Use. It applies solely to scholarly, academic, non-profit, or journalistic use of properly credited UN photos.
The standard UN photo licensing permission form is available for download. (Pre-generated permission forms for online photo requests can be found in Your Account.) Third party permission forms are not accepted.
CREDIT
All UN photos, whether used in print, electronic or online format, must be credited as follows:
UN Photo by [name of photographer] (if available) or as stated in the corresponding photo caption.
CHARGES AND FEES
DIGITAL IMAGES
UN digital images - thumbnails, low resolution and/or high-resolution - downloadable from the web, offered on a CD or dispatched electronically by email, and their reproduction in most formats are free of charge. Publications fees apply when the images are used in commercially published print monographs, including textbooks (initial use - US $50.00 per photo; reuse: US $25.00 per photo).
There are no charges for the use of the following UN photos:
UN flag; the UN landmark building; general views of the Security Council, the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, and the International Court of Justice; and photos of UN peacekeepers in action.
Charges are not applicable to United Nations Associations, UN-affiliated non-governmental organizations, and organizations in the UN family.
PHOTO PRINTS
Photo print requests from outside clients are not accepted.
A limited number of print requests, will be accepted from UN offices and delegates. Photos offered in print format include only the plenary sessions of the Security Council and the General Assembly (General Debate), and the presentation of credentials. (Photo print fees: US $15.00 per print; US $3.00 for each additional copy of the same image ordered at the same time.) Photos of other events are only made available electronically, and prints may be arranged by the requester at a commercial facility outside the UN. (For details,
