On January 19, 2006 UNIC Moscow organized a launch of the report"Challenges of Peace Operations - into the 21st Century." The panel members were: Professor Tuzmukhamedov, who had been a part of the research team on the report, the Ambassador of Sweden Johan Harald Molander, and Mr. Alexander Konuzin, the Director of the UN Department at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
UNIC Moscow Director moderated the discussion. Among the audience members there were the Ambassadors of Senegal and Jordan, several diplomats, the Head of the NATO Military Liaison Mission in Russia, veterans of UN peacekeeping operations, and high-level representatives of the Russian Ministries of Defense and Interior.

To promote the Human
Rights Day (10 December) 2005, UNIC Bujumbura organized
a media workshop on the theme "Combating Torture", in partnership
with the Press House of Burundi. UNIC organized a discussion of
the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or
Degrading Treatment or Punishment, ratified by Burundi Government
in 1987. 60 journalists participated in the workshop.

On 3 December, 2005 UNIC Sana'a organized in cooperation
with UNICEF a round table discussion for the media with the theme
of "HIV/AIDS: Stand up to the challenge (it is everyone's responsibility)."
Around 50 media representatives attended. Dr. Fawzia Gharamah, National
Coordinator of AIDS Program at the Ministry of Public Health and
Population, and Mr. Hussein Basalim, Deputy Minister of Information,
spoke at the seminar.

The United Nations Information Centre
(UNIC) Yaounde organized an Educational Outreach event on Thursday,
29 September 2005 at 2 Schools, in Yaounde namely: Lycée
Bilingue d’Etoug-Ebe and Mervick Grammar School, Etoug-Ebe.
At both schools, the NIO held a 30 minute discussion with the students,
using a question-answer format, to share information about the United
Nations and its substantive work (worldwide and in Cameroon). The
International Day of Peace commemorated on 21 September and the
2005 World Summit held in New York (14 – 16 September) were
2 good examples used during the discussion to illustrate the purpose
and activities of the United Nations.

UNFPA Romania, UNIC Bucharest and
Quadrant Amroq Beverages Romania have provided to the victims of
the recent floods in Buftea, a town 20 km away from the capital
city, a truck with bituminous cardboard (roof cover) and a truck
with mineral water. The money for the roof cover was donated by
UNFPA Representatives in New York, Europe and Eastern Asia who have
participated in a regional meeting in Bucharest. The mineral water
was donated to the local community by UNIC and QAB.

The global UNDP Human Development
Report (HDR) 2005 was launched in Asmara, Eritrea, on 16 September
2005. Officiated by the Minister of National Development, Dr. Woldai
Futur, and the UN Resident Coordinator, the launch, moderated by
Ms. Angela Berry Koch, Head of OCHA, was attended by over 170 high-level
participants comprising of representatives from Eritrean Government
Ministries, Embassies, national and international NGOs, civil society
organizations, academicians, UN Agencies, national and international
media.

Asmara, 23 August 2005 - President Isaias Afwerki
today received and held talks with the UN Secretary General's Special
Envoy for Humanitarian Crisis in the Horn of Africa, Mr. Marti Ahtisaari.
The talks focused on efforts Eritrea is making
to attain food security and the response of the international community
to emergency relief aid as well as the Eritrea 's policy on the
activities of non-governmental organizations
(NGOs).
President Isaias said that Eritrea is exerting
coordinated efforts towards attaining food security and that the
international aid has to back up this goal through the on going
endeavors to promote soil and water conservation. He further informed
Mr. Ahtisaari that the aid Eritrea received from the world community
in fighting drought has not only been not commensurate with the
desired amount but did not also reach on time.
As regards the Eritrea government's policy on
NGOs, the President said that the policy proclaimed in 1994 ensures
accountability and transparency to both donor and recipient.

Earlier, Mr. Ahtisaari met and
held similar talks with Foreign Minister Ali Seid Abdullah, the
Minister of National Development, Dr. Woldai Future, the Minister
of Labor and Human Welfare, Ms. Askalu Menkorios as well as heads
of the Eritrean Relief and Refugee Commission (ERREC).
The UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for Humanitarian
Crisis in the Horn of Africa is making the current visit to observe
the prevailing situation of the rainy season.
