World Summit on the Information Society

 

 

UNIC Moscow

On Friday, 25 November UNIC Moscow held a special event dedicated to the World Summit on the Information Society. Approximately 40 people attended the event including: government officials, various civil society organizations, and members of the media. The UNIC Director opened the meeting with a presentation referring to the remarks made by the Secretary-General at the Tunis conference. He also addressed the digital divide within and between states. The keynote speakers were Mr. Yuri Grin', Director of the International Cooperation Department at the Ministry of Information Technologies and Telecommunications, Mr. Andrei Krutskikh, Deputy Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Department for Security and Disarmament, and a representative of the civil society, Mrs. Elena Krikunenko of the Indigenous Peoples Association. Ms. Krikunenko described the project to create a global indigenous issues' website, which will be launched in following months.

Teachers gathered at UNIC Pretoria to participate in a live interaction with USG Tharoor on the issue of cultural diversity in Pretoria on 17 November.

Nitin Desai,  Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) briefing the media on the upcoming Summit. UNIC Director Shalini Dewan spoke on salient issues of the Summit, introduced Mr. Desai and moderated the extensive Q&A.

UNIC Bujumbura

On 17 November, teachers in Burundi participated in a web-conference with Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information Shashi Tharoor who was in Tunis. During the web conference teachers were able to ask Mr. Tharoor questions interactively via the web. The event attracted several journalists for whom UNIC Bujumbura translated various WSIS documents and content questions into French.

UNIC Nairobi

On 15 November, Kenyan students participated in a web-conference with Nane Annan, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's wife, and Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information Shashi Tharoor. During the web conference, students were able to ask questions dealing with a number of issues including: communication technology, cultural diversity, education, and information technology.
