UNICs promote UN Issues

The UN Works campaign

 

"The UN Works" is an on-going campaign.

Follow the images from the launch of the campaign in 2000, the year of the Millennium Summit of the General Assembly, to tell the stories of how the world Organization works to help improve the lives of people everywhere. Some UNICs have locally reproduced or translated "The UN Works" posters which are available in hard copies, or posted on their web pages, where available. At the initiative of UNIC Buenos Aires, Maximiliano Guerra, internationally well-known Argentine ballet dancer, posed for "The UN Works" campaign, which focused on environmental protection and creation of opportunities for the youth.

The UN activities carried out by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) were featured in a series of posters produced by UNIS Bangkok. ESCAP serves some 3.8 billion people, representing 60 per cent of the world's population.

As part of its promotional activities leading to the International Conference on Financing for Development that took place at Monterrey from 18 to 22 March 2002, UNIC Mexico City arranged for the placement of billboards and banners with "The UN Works" messages along the streets and other public areas in Monterrey, as well as on bus shelters in Mexico City.

Goodwill Messenger for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and former Miss Universe Lupita Jones, together with Minister Luis Alfonso de Alba, cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony of "The UN Works" exhibit held on 28 August 2001 in Mexico City. The event was coordinated by UNIC Mexico City and marked the launch of "The UN Works" campaign in Mexico.

UNIC Moscow produced Russian-language versions of a series of posters highlighting "The UN Works" theme and arranged to place them in subway cars in the Moscow metro.

During the Secretary-General's visit to India in March 2001, The Director of UNIC New Delhi, took the opportunity to show him "The UN Works" booklet, produced locally by the UNIC, promoting the activities of UN agencies and programmes in India.

"The UN Works" message was highly visible at one of the busiest streets in Panama City. UNIC Panama City was also instrumental in coordinating the UN system exhibit stand at the Tenth Ibero-American Presidential Summit (17-19 November 2000) to showcase the work of the United Nations in Panama.

In collaboration with the United Nations system partners active in the Caribbean, UNIC Port of Spain featured some of its major activities in the Millennium Calendar 2001.

Olympic champions Jan Zelezny and Lida Formanova were featured in one of the five full page ads produced by UNIC Prague for "The UN Works" campaign. The ads appeared free of charge in all major Czech dailies and weeklies before and during the Millennium Summit, and were reproduced on a series of posters and postcards.

The message -- "The UN Works" for the people of the world -- was highly visible on an electronic billboard in the Johannesburg-Pretoria Highway as part of UNIC Pretoria's publicity campaign for the Millennium Summit.
