On 1 October 2005 UNIS Vienna organized a charity soccer tournament
on the occasion of the International
Year of Sport and Physical Education (IYSPE),
which UNIS also linked to UN 60 and the World Summit.
All proceeds were donated to Child-Care-Afrika,
an Austrian NGO. Six teams made up of United Nations
staff, diplomats and representatives of media
and local government came together to play soccer.
The teams played with MDG Footballs , produced and
donated by Don BoscoAktion Austria. Over Euro 800 was collected.
The United Nations Correspondents Association
(UNCAV) gave the event wide publicity.
The US 100 metres Olympic Champion Justin Gatlin sped his way to victory at the 25th international athletics meeting, The Golden Gala, on 8 July 2005 , which was co-sponsored by RUNIC Brussels.
The Golden Gala was not only about world-level athletes. It also hosted a maxi-relay event for junior athletes. For the 30 teams taking part in the non competitive race, what really mattered was to be there.

The annual marathon of the “Pyunik” Union of the disabled of Armenia started on 4 June at 11:00, from the Opera House. The marathon was aimed at focusing public attention to the problems of the disabled people, supporting their integration with the society. Nearly 50 disabled people with hand-wheels, accompanied by the volunteers of the union, participated in the marathon. The event finished at 16:00 at the Holy See of St. Echmiadzin. UN DPI supported the marathon, which marked the 60th Anniversary of the UN and the International Year of Sport and Physical Education. Preparation of T-shirts with logos of UN 60 and IYSPE was funded by the JIAP (Joint Information activities plan) budget. The disabled people and the group accompanying them wore the T-shirts during the marathon.
A celebration of the “International Year of Sports and Physical Education” took place in Lambayeque, Peru, on 26 June, 2005. The event was organized by the “Friends of the UN Club” of Peru, and was sponsored by UNIC Lima.
The UN Office in Armenia, together with the National Alpine Federation of the Republic of Armenia, organized a mountain climbing expedition to ascend Mt. Elbrus from 3 to 13 May, 2005 in order to commemorate the end of World War II. The Armenian team also dedicated the ascent to the 60th anniversary of the United Nations, the Millennium Development Goals and the International Year of Sport and Physical Education. About 500 alpinists from 20 countries participated. Mount Elbrus is 5642 meters or 18506 feet tall.
On 30 March, 2005, UNIC Yaounde organised a Special UN
Press Club “Rencontre” to launch the International
Year of Sports and Physical Education.
The event was co-chaired by the Minister of Sports and Physical
Education, H.E Philippe MBARGA MBOUA and the Resident Coordinator
of the UN System in Cameroon, Mrs Patricia De Mowbray. Cabinet
Ministers, Presidents of Sports Federations, Teachers of
Physical Education, Representatives of the Private Sector
and the Media, as well as Heads of UN Agencies and Diplomatic
Missions attended the launch.
