UNICs promote UN Issues

10th Anniversary of the Genocide of Rwanda

 

UNIC Bujumbura organized a Media Workshop on the theme, "The role of the Media in preventing the Genocide:lessons from Rwanda" on 8 november 2007. The first lecture, made by the President of "ITEKA", a Human Rights League, the major civil society organization; was entitled, "The Genocide towards the national and international law: lessons from Rwanda". The second lecture, made by a media professional from the national television was entitled, "The role of the Media in preventing the Genocide". The UNIC National Information Officer made the introductory speech, moderated the debates and made the conclusion remarks. UNIC also printed a promotional folder in which a press kit was packed and distributed to the participants. 80 journalists from all the local media attended the workshop, among them, the chief editors from the local media. The activity was highly covered by the local media including the national telelvision and its content was very much appreciated by the participants as it had a direct connexion with the socio-political situation of the country.    
   
UNIC Dar Es Salaam, in collaboration with the Rwanda Embassy, organized the commemoration of the Rwanda Genocide to mobilize civil society, the international community and the general public for the genocide victims' remembrance and education to prevent future genocides in April 2006.

The commemoration started with a church service followed by a video screening entitled "Keepers of Memory". The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation who was the guest of honour presented a statement on behalf of the Government. UNIC Officer-in-Charge presented a statement on behalf of the UN country team while the ambassador of the embassy of Rwanda presented a statement on behalf of his government. The ICTR was represented at the commemoration attended by about 200 people.

The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Yaounde organised an outreach event with Rwandan Refugees on Friday 7 April 2006, on the occasion of the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda, at the UNIC Premises.
There were 21 Rwandan refugees in attendance, a Representative from the United Nations Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (UNHCR), Mr. Barancira and a Representative of an NGO called “Tribune Sans Frontière”, Ms. Marie-Concilia Anchang. The event lasted nearly three and a half hours.

UNIC Yaounde
   

Nearly 150 UN staff members, representatives of the diplomatic community and religious leaders assembled at the United Nations Office at Nairobi to commemorate the International Day of Reflection on the Genocide in Rwanda on 7 April 2006. The event was organized by UNIC Nairobi.

Ms. Inga  Björk-Klevby, Deputy Executive Director, UN Habitat, gave the keynote address. Guests included the Ambassador of Rwanda to Kenya, Mr. William Kayonga and Ms. Elisabeth Guilbaud-Cox of UNEP.
