The Information Officer for UNO Baku has initiated a joint trip with representatives of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA), UNDP, and UNICEF on 3-4 April 2007 in order to increase the awareness of the danger of mines.

During this two day trip they toured Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action facilities in the Horadiz Camp to learn about the operational activities on the site, meet with de-miners, and see mechanical de-mining and mine detection dog operations. They also participated in mine risk education classes at a village school. The classes are open to everyone and are supported by the Government of Azerbaijan and UNICEF.

Our Media advisory worked excellently as a reminder for media to highlight the issue of the mine threat, which is so acute in Azerbaijan. Five TV outlets covered the visit; A prominent local journalist from “The Express” newspaper to accompany the UN officials on their visit and he is preparing an in-depth article from the field. Several local TV station and news agencies also broadcasted the SG’s message. In addition, UN Radio conducted an interview with all participants.
