On 19 February 2008, Nueva Granada School commemorated the XXVI Model UN
conference entitled "Sovereign Humanity." The Model UN brought together
more than 40 participants schools. It took place in the convention center
of Compensar in Bogota.
From 20 to 22 February 2008 over 500 students from across the country
assembled with the goal of bringing diplomatic solutions for many current
and historic events simulating the negotiation model used at the UN.
Among the topics discussed in the plenary sessions students contemplated
global issues such as the refugees situation in Iraq, social implications
of the ideology of the extreme left, disarmament and security in the Middle East,
nuclear-free zones in Iraq, and some recreated Past discussions concerning
to the Independence wars of Algeria in 1962 and Guinea Bissau in 1974.
A UN stand organized by the Centre with products from some UN agencies
(UNICEF, World Bank, UNFPA, and UNHCHR) was organized during the Model.
Books, charters, posters and information were delivered.
Kenya Model UN (KMUN), a wholly University student- run non- profit organization whose mission is to give youth a voice and a vote in policy, organized a 3 day Model UN exercise at the UN Headquarters in Gigiri. The exercise attracted over 300 delegates from 11 different university chapters. UNIC Nairobi provided all the technical assistance the students required.
From 12 to 17 October 2006 UNIC Pretoria
participated in the organisation of the annual
SAMUN Model UN finals for Secondary schools held in Cape Town.
The debates were officially opened by Ms Helen Zille, Executive Mayor of Cape Town,
Mr Hubert Charles, Office Director & UNESCO Representative UNESCO Abuja (Nigeria)
and a representative of Cell C, the company that sponsors the event.
The two day event, organised by
Education Africa and
supported by the government of South Africa,
local authorities as well as various UN agencies in the country,
consisted of 3 debating sessions on the following topics:
United Nations Intervention for Humanitarian Purposes -
A necessity for the maintenance of peace and human rights
or an infringement on a nation’s right to sovereignty?
“Trade not Aid” - Can the “cycle of poverty” be
lessened through increased trade rather than more aid?
The “Brain Drain” from the developing to the developed world.
Freedom of movement versus development priorities
On Sunday all learners departed for Robben Island
for an Imprisonment Role Play, a fireside debate led by former prisoner
Justice Dikgang Moseneke and an overnight stay in the prison blocks.
The winning team from Gauteng (Zimbabwe) will represent South Africa
during the international Model UN competition, to be held in the United
States in April 2007.
Several national TV and radio stations
as well as the print press extensively covered the event.
On Saturday, 30 September 2006, UNIC Pretoria supported and adjudicated the
Interuniversity Model UN debating com-petition held at the University of
Pre-toria.
20 teams from University of Pretoria as well as the Witwatersrand
University Johannesburg discussed the topic of trade liberalisation and the
WTO and agreed upon two resolutions. Mexico was nominated for its team-work,
while the 2 WITS-students rep-resenting China were voted to be the best team
reflecting the policy of the represented country. The event was supported by
the University of Pretoria, Department of International Relations, the South
African Institute for International Affairs, UNIC Pretoria and the
government of South Africa, Department of Foreign Affairs.
On Saturday 26 August 2006 UNIC Pretoria adjudicated the Model UN provincial competition held at the Western Cape Legislature in Cape Town (South Africa). 25 teams representing various countries debated on the topic of debt and debt cancellation. The winning team takes part in the national competition to be held from 13 – 16 October in Cape Town and on Robben Island.
On Saturday, 12 August 2006 UNIC Pretoria adjudicated the Model UN provincial
competition held at the North West Legislature in Mafikeng – North West province.
19 teams representing various countries debated on the topic of debt and debt cancellation.
Over a 100 tutors as well as fellow students and parents were present to support the learners.
The winning teams were :
1st: BRAZIL: Mafikeng High School/St. Michael's High School
2nd: BELGIUM: Potchefstroom Secondary / Ferdinand Postma High School
3rd: ARGENTINA: Modiri High School / Tebogwana Comp. High School
The winning team takes part in the national competition to be held
from 13 – 16 October in Cape Town and on Robben Island.
On Saturday 27 May 2006 UNIC Pretoria supported the Model UN provincial
workshop held in Mafikeng - North West Province. After a brief introduction
by the workshop trainers, the UNIC Communications Specialist briefed the 42
present teams on the structure, role and function of the UN in South Africa.
This years competition theme - Africa and Debt Cancellation - was presented
and the UNIC representative handed out a selection of relevant
UN-publications to each participating school.
On Saturday 20 May 2006 UNIC Pretoria
supported the Model UN provincial workshop
held at the Capricorn High School in Polokwane -
Limpopo Province. After a brief introduction
by the workshop trainers, the UNIC Communications
Specialist briefed the 50 present teams on the structure
of the UN and its role and function in South Africa.
This year’s competition theme - Africa and Debt Cancellation -
was presented and the UNIC representative
handed out a selection of relevant UN-publications
to each participating school.
On 20 April 2006 UNIC Ouagadougou organized a traning session on UN Refform
for 150 students who participate in Model UN.
The speakers included the Officer-in-Charge of UNIC Ouagadougou, the Goodwill Ambassador
of the Association for the UN in the Dominican Republic and
the Director General of the Diplomatic Institute of Ouagadougou, Mr. Nacro Mouhoussine.
UNIC Pretoria’s communications specialist addressed the participating
students in the opening session of the SAIIA-Model UN debating competition
held on 11 March 2006 at the University of the Witwatersrand. Key
issues presented were the UN structure and reform, the relevance of the New
Human Rights Commission and the role of UNIC in the South African country
team.
At the opening day for the first year students, on 23 January 2006, UNIC Pretoria Communications Specialist met with University of Pretoria United Nations Association members.
On 18 January 2006, UNIC Pretoria National Information Officer and Officer-In-Charge adressed the Education Africa Annual Board meeting on the Model UN competition in South Africa.
