UNICs and the UN family

 

On 20 February 2008, UNIC Bogotá together with UNESCO - Caracas, organized a press conference, which was attended by 25 media representatives of national and international media in order to launch the Regional Conference on Higher Education 2008. The conference was coordinated by Instituto Internacional para la Educacion Superior en America Latina y el Caribe (International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean) and the Ministry of National Education of Colombia, with the support of the Colombian Association of Universities and the Andres Bello Agreement .

UNIC Bogota

 

On 7 December, 2007 the Georgia UN House hosted a UN Media Club meeting on Global Human Development Report, Fighting climate change: Human solidarity in a divided world, which provides a stark account of the threat posed by global warming.

UNDP’s Program Analyst Mariam Shotadze briefed the journalists on the key findings of the Global Human Development Report. UNDP’s Economic Team leader Sophie Kemkhadze provided information on the Human Development Index (HDI).

In addition, a documentary film on renewable energy project that is being implemented by the UNDP in the Racha region was aired.

The event was organized by the UNDPI/UNO together with the UNDP. Along with the Club members, the meeting was attended by the printed and broadcast media representatives. The event provided an excellent opportunity for UN and media representatives to gather in an informal setting.

Established in May 2006, the UN Media Club - a voluntary, informal club of journalists - is an interactive information exchange network to promote UN values.

DPI of UNO Georgia

 

On 28 November 2007, a press conference was organized by UNIC Tripoli, Libya, to launch the Human Development Report 2007-2008. The UN Resident Coordinator briefed the journalists about the report. The program was broadcast on national TV three times during peak hours. A number of newspapers reported the event on their front page.

The United Nations Department of Public Information (UN DPI) Baku in partnership with the Azerbaijan National Commission for UNESCO, Ataturk Centre and the Association of Culture of Azerbaijan “Simurg” facilitated a roundtable discussion on the “Need for a Culture of Dialogue on the road to a Dialogue of Cultures” on 19 May 2007 at Ataturk Centre bringing together around eighty participants from three ministries, (Culture and Tourism, Foreign Affairs, and Youth and Sport), State Committee for Family, Women and Children, Chairs for the Parliamentary Commissions for Human Rights, Culture, and the representative of the Commission on International Relations of the Parliament, and other government officials and even a political opposition representative, as well as heads and members of different CSOs and NGOs, academic institutions and universities, representatives of international organizations. The topic of discussion and the high level of representation drew significant mass media attention.

United Nations Office in Baku

 

On Tuesday 31 October 2006 UNIC Pretoria organised an Open Library day in cooperation with the Regional World Bank Office in South Africa. More than 65 librarians and public information officers from various government departments as well as libraries, NGO’s and international institutions attended this half day event, aiming to showcase information UN and Worldbank resources. Key remarks were made by the UNIC South Africa Director and the World Bank Regional Country Director. After 2 short presentations by the respective information officers, participants could tour the library and get tips on researching online UN and World Bank information sources.

UNIC Pretoria

 

On Friday 26 May 2006 UNIC Pretoria supported half day workshop on demonstrating the E-Demo School to Phafogang High School (Soweto) organised by the UNDP Regional Services Centre for Southern and Eastern Africa.

After opening remarks by UNDP RSC representative Dr. Roland Msiska, and Microsoft NEPAD Special Advisor Mr. Ahmed Kassam, UNIC briefed the participating learners about the UN and the role of ICT’s in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Learnthings-representative Ms Michelle Lissoos gave a presentation, followed by an e-learning demonstration.

UNIC Pretoria

 

   

On 14-16 June 2005, UNIC Yaounde launched the AFRASIA Business Council, a follow-up to the Tokyo International Conference on African Development III (TICAD III) International Conference. The UNDP TICAD Director, Ambassador Bouna Sémou Diouf, who is also UNDP Special Adviser on Africa, attended the launch. UNIC organised media coverage of his visit and the AFRASIA event.
