UNICs promote UN issues

United Nations Conference on Trade and Development

 

 

On Thursday, 21 September 2006 UNIC Pretoria supported the press launch of the annual UNCTAD Report on Economic Development in Africa, Doubling Aid: Making the Big Push Work.

The event was hosted by the Johannesburg-based Industrial Development Cooperation. UNIC Pretoria assisted in the organisation as well as the provision and dissemination of the report.

UNCTAD representative Mr Sam Gayi as well as Mr Jorge Maia, the Head of Research and Information at IDC were present to discuss the report and answer questions of more than 25 journalists. The event was broadcast on SABC as well as on Channel Africa, the continent-wide radio station based in South Africa.

UNIC Pretoria  

UNIC Dar es Salaam organized the Launch of the World Investment Report 2005 on 29 September 2005. The UNIC Acting-Director, who is also the UN Resident Coordinator, presented the opening statement by the UNCTAD Secretary-General. The Acting Executive Director for Tanzania Investment Centre presented an overview of the Report. The event was attended by about 75 people, among whom were representatives of the Government and Finance Houses, High Commissioners and Ambassadors, the business community, the academia, UN agencies and both the electronic and print media. The launch was extensively covered by the media.

UNIC Harare launched the World Investment Report on September 29, 2005. The launch was attended by over 50 people including the representatives of the media, financial institutions, members of the diplomatic corps and business-people. The information was used widely by television.

On 13th of September 2005, at a well attended press event in Nairobi, there was a launch of the 2005 UNCTAD Report on “Economic Development in Africa: Rethinking the Role of Foreign Direct Investment.” The report was presented by Professor David Olusanya Ajakaiye, Director of Research, African Economic Research Consortium, on behalf of UNCTAD. The event attracted 56 journalists from 33 local and international media groups. UNIC Nairobi moderated the press conference. It distributed the Report and related documents.
