UNICs promote UN issues

Stand Up Against Poverty

 

 

UNIC Bogota organized 17 events to mark the Stand Up Against Poverty campaign at schools in Bogota and Medellin in 2007. Approximately 17,000 students,teachers and administrative staff. The main event was organized at "Portal del Sol" where more than 3,800 students stood up Against Poverty and the UNIC Bogota Director read the message of the Day.

UN agencies in the country, such as UNDP, OHCHR, PAHO, FAO, UNFPA, UNODC IOM and UN Resident Coordinator's Office also helped organize the event.

In Cameroon, an estimated number of participants reached 12,000 people in the in the Stand Up, Speak Out Against Poverty Event on 16-17 October 2007. In Yaounde alone, almost 3,000 persons stood up for wealth. The special outreach events involved 10 primary public schools (one in each of the ten provinces of Cameroon). UNIC Yaounde partnered with UNDP, as well as with the UNDG and UNICEF to work on the Campaign.

Five thousand people stood up for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and against poverty in Kayanza province in Bujumbura on 16 October 2007. UNIC Bujumbura, together with UNDP and FAO, organized this event during the commemoration of the World Food day and International Day of Eradication of Poverty.
