UNIC Lusaka organized a panel discussion in observance of International Mother Language Day. Media and students were invited to participate in the observance, which took place at the University of Zambia chapel on 21 February 2008. Around 200 people attended the event.

At the conclusion of his assessment mission to India focusing on maternal health and maternal mortality, UNIC New Delhi organized a press conference for Paul Hunt, Special Rapporteur on the right to health on 3rd December 2007 at the UN Conference Hall in the UNIC office.

During his 10-day visit to India, the Special Rapporteur made field trips to Rajasthan and Maharashtra and met with high-level government officials as well as human rights and civil society organizations.

UNIC New Delhi

On 20 November 2007 the UNIC Antananarivo, Madagascar, helped organize the celebration of the Africa Industrialization Day, which was held at the Ministry of Economy and Industry in Anosy, Antananarivo. The theme of this day was "Technology and innovation at the industry’s service: investing in the human capital is investing in the future ." The events of the day were organized in collaboration with UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Among the events were film screenings, debates, a Malagasy art exhibition and visits to companies for secondary school pupils.

UNIC Antananarivo

On Friday, 19 October 2007, the UNIC Moscow, Russia organized a commemorative event on the occasion of a significant and symbolical date – the 50th Anniversary of the beginning of the Space Era. Among the guests were eminent academics, journalists, artists, members of the Russian civil society.

After the UNIC Moscow Director opened the ceremony, Boris Chertok delivered a remarkable speech about the design and launch of the first satellite. He is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and one of the creators of the Sputnik, and he is nearly 94 years of age. Mr. Chertok also said that modern-day cooperation between different countries lead to a more efficient exploration of space, and the international orbital station is merely one example of such a partnership. Victor Afanasiev, Astronaut and President of the International League for Protection of Culture and Vladimir Priklonsky, member of the Federal Outer Space Agency also spoke.

UNIC Moscow

UNIC Bujumbura, Burundi assisted the UNFPA in the launch the 2007 State of the World Population Report. A press conference was organized at the UNIC premises on 28 June 2007, under the patronage of the Minister of Public Works and Equipment. 60 journalists participated in the press conference. UNIC distributed the reports to all participants.

UNIC Bujumbura

UNIC Moscow, Russia, has held an opening of an exhibit of political cartoons on Friday, April 27 2007. The well-known cartoonist Victor Bogorad presented his works. "Vedomosti', one of the two major business dailies in Russia, and "The Moscow Times" are the newspapers where his work has appeared and they have contributed to the organization of the exhibit.

UNIC Moscow

On 21st February 2007 the UNO Baku, Azerbaijan, the National Commission for UNESCO of Republic of Azerbaijan and the Baku Ataturk Centre celebrated the International Mother Language Day in Azerbaijan for the first time. More than 20 media outlets covered the event.

The Head of the Permanent Parliamentary Commission on Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Nizami Jafarov, made an opening remark. Later on, the Head of UNDPI Azerbaijan and the Secretary-General of the National Commission for UNESCO of the Republic of Azerbaijan explained the importance of language and diversity, two distinguished concepts which are a part of Azerbaijan's historical tradition.

Some prominent linguists, representatives of different ethnic cultural centers, the Head of the Sector of the Department on Cultural Policy of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ms. Latifa Mammedova, and the Head of the Department in the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Agababa Ibrahimov, spoke at the event.

UNO Baku

On Friday, 16 February 2007, UNIC Moscow, Russia, organized a meeting between the Head of the UNEP, Mr. Achim Steiner, and several members of the Russian civil society and affiliates of the business community. Some of the notable representatives were the Deputy Chairperson of the Duma’s Environmental Committee, Ms. Marina Lebedeva, the Director of Environmental Policy, Mr. Eugeny Shvarts, Ms. Marina Liborakina as agent of “Unified Energy System of Russia” and the Executive Director of the NGO “Corporate Social Responsibility”, Mr. Alexey Kostin.

After the introductory speech of Mr. Steiner mentioning that UNEP can work more efficiently with the Russian actors, some of the prominent partners pointed out other relevant issues, for instance, the balance between economic imperatives and environmental concerns that the Russian Parliament is looking for. Others matters, which were discussed were related to ecological issues and inviting Russian leadership to adopt a more responsible stance regarding the environmental agenda.

The result of the reunion was highly effective and it was a good opportunity to strengthen the relation between the Moscow Office of UNEP and the Russian environmental community.

UNIC Moscow
On '26 January 2007, UNIC Antananarivo, Madagascar organised a two hour workshop with journalists for promoting the film "A Year in Review" and to have an exchange about the new United Nations. About 40 journalists participated in the seminar. They were very interested in UN actions in the world. The film was broadcast and discussed. Comparing the situation in the world, malagasy journalists said that the most important thing in life is peace and respect for human rights. The journalists were also interested in discussing climate change. As Madagascar is rich in biodiversity, many journalists write stories about the environment. Documents about the SG and about human rights were distributed during this session.

UNIC Antananarivo

The UN Press Club was launched in Garoua, capital of the North Province, Cameroon on Wednesday 22 November 2006 by UNIC Yaounde. The event took place at the WFP Sub-office in Garoua and chaired by the Provincial Delegate of Communication, Abdul Asale, who made the introductory remarks.

UNIC’s NIO’s explained the Terms of Reference (TOR) regarding the key objectives of the UN Press Club and the awaited results after its launch in Garoua. She also presented briefly the content of the press kit and UN documents distributed to participants on arrival.

UNIC Yaounde

On 24 October 2006 UNIC Pretoria representatives attended the Joint Signing by the GoSA and the UN of the 2007 - 2010 UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) at the Diplomatic Guest House in Pretoria. The document was officially signed after opening addresses by Mrs Scholastica Kimaryo, UNDP Resident Representative & Coordinator of the UN System in South Africa and Ms Sue van der Merwe, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Africa.

The new UNDAF was developed in the best spirit of the Paris Declaration and fully aligned with national development priorities, framed within the context of the Government’s system of cooperative governance. It also reflects the principles of UN Reform, in terms of system-wide coherence and joint programming in the development and implementation of the UNDAF as well as programme simplification and harmonization.

In the framework of the opening of the 61st session of the General Assembly and the holding of the High-Level Dialogue on Migrations and Development, UNIC Ouagadougou in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Burkina Faso, organized on 6 September 2006 in its premises, an information seminar for 30 journalists.

A day-long Training Workshop on Web page Development held on 8 September 2006 at Stamford University, India, Computer Lab in Dhaka. The workshop was jointly organized by UNIC Dhaka and Stamford University under the banner of UN Library Network in Bangladesh (UN L-Net BD) – an initiative of UNIC Library.

UNIC Dhaka
On 18 September 2006, the UN system in Zambia commemorated the death of Dag Hammarskjold. The somber ceremony, during which poems on the work of DH and hymns were sung, was held in Ndola, the site where the plane crashed on September 18th 1961.

Earlier in the week, from 13th to 16th September, Mindolo Ecumenical Foundations organized a Dag Hammarskjold seminar on the theme "Environment and Peace". UNIC was represented at the seminar and participated by organizing an exhibition on the work of DG.

UNIC Lusaka
On August 1st 2006, UNIC Pretoria together with the Embassy of Poland have launched the African leg of the traveling exhibition of 45 posters on the subject of "UN at 60."

Approximately 50 guests attended, including the representatives of the diplomatic corps, government, NGOs and academic institutions. A welcome address was delivered by the UNIC OIC, and the Polish ambassador gave the keynote speech.

UNIC Pretoria

UNIC Bujumbura created a press club for Child Rights and the promotion of the UN Convention for Child rights in particular. The press club is composed of journalists from all the local media as well as Press attachés from the governmental institutions.

UNIC National Information Officer held a meeting with 30 journalists composing the starting team of the press club to determine together the main objectives of the press club and the potential partners of the Club. The UNICEF communication Team attended the meeting and was enthusiastic to be identified as partner and supporter of the club. The meeting took place at the UNIC conference room on 12 July 2006.

UNIC Bujumbura
On Tuesday, 11 July, UNIC mounted a stand at the UNICEF-organised conference on orphans and vulnerable children held in Johannesburg.

South African Minister of Social Development, Dr. Zola Skweyiya was one of the attendees.

The conference launched a campaign called "United for Children" by UNICEF and the South African Ministry of Social Development.

The campaign's purpose would be to improve the situation of orphans and other children made vulnerable by HIV-AIDS.

Under Secretary General for Political Affairs, Mr. Ibrahim Gambari, met with the UN staff in Myanmar on 18 May 2006. He was greeted by the President of the Federation of UN Staff Associations in Myanmar (FUNSA) and UNIC National Information Office and introduced to the staff. He spoke about the UN Reform.

UNIC Tehran assisted in the organization of the press-conference to commemorate the first International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action at UN Building in Tehran on 4 April 2006.

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Director of Centre for Mine Clearance Cooperation in Iran Dr. Shirin Ebadi spoke at the press conference. UN Resident Coordinator and the UNIC Director also spoke at the conference. Local and international journalists attended the event.

The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people was commemorated on 29 November 2005 in Pretoria, South Africa.

Key speakers at the event were South African Minister of Safety and Security Mr. Charles Nqakula, South African Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms. Sue van der Merwe, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in South Africa Lybian Ambassador H.E. Dr. Abdella Alzubedi, South African anti-apartheid hero Max Ozinsky and internationally renowned author, journalist, peace activist and "Poet of Compassion" Don Matera.

UNIC South Africa Officer-in-Charge read the message by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. The Palestinian Ambassador H.E. Mr. Salman El Herfi spoke on the Palestinian case.

On Thursday 24 November 2005 the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), Yaounde organised the launch of the UN Press Club in Douala . The event's objectives were to better UNIC's media outreach and strengthen the relationship between the centre and the media. UNIC identified 15 media professionals comprised of managers, publishers, editors-in-chief and senior reporters to make-up the UN Press Club in Douala .

UNIC Yaounde launched its computerized Library on Thursday 11 August 2005 . A formal ceremony was organised in the UNIC Conference Hall and was co-chaired by H.E.Mr. Joseph DION NGUTE, Minister Delegate, Ministry of External Relations (MINREX) and Madame Patricia de Mowbray, UN System Resident Co-ordinator .

Professor Jean-Emmanuel Pondi , Director of the International Relations Institute of Cameroon (IRIC), Prof. Njieunde Germain, Professor Fucha Innocent, and other University Lecturers participated to this event which brought together Government officials, Parliamentarians, NGO, Media, Students and Civil Society Organisations, etc.

The event included two statements made respectively by Thérèse Tommo Monthé , the UNIC Library Assistant, and Madame Patricia de Mowbray, the UN System Resident Co-ordinator.

H.E. Mr. Joseph Dion Ngute, the Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations (MINREX ) then proceeded with the cutting of the Ribbon to unveil the computers used for presentation by a UNIC Staff. The ceremony ended with a guided tour visit of the library and family picture.

On 29th July 2005, the centenary of the birth of Dag Hammarskjold, the former United Nations Secretary General, was commemorated in Kitwe, Zambia. The event was organized by the Dag Hammarskjold Memorial Initiative, a body comprised of the Government of Zambia, the UN Country Team, diplomatic community and the business community. On the occasion of the anniversary, two sets of Dag Hammarskjold Centenary commemorative stamps were launched.

The United Nations offices in Washington, Better World Campaign and UN Foundation sponsored a six-month review of  Tsunami Relief and Reconstruction: on Friday, June 24, 2005. Congressional Attendees included The Honorable Jim Leach (R-IA) and The Honorable Joseph Crowley (D-NY.) Speakers included representatives from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Food and Agriculture Organization, United Nations Children's Fund, United Nations Development Program and World Food Program.

Working with governments around the world, NGOs and others, almost two dozen United Nations agencies responded to the tsunami crisis -- assisting more than five million affected by this tragic disaster -- by providing relief, reconstruction, health, shelter, child protection, early warning system assistance and other services.

This briefing reflected on UN coordination efforts, lessons learned and next steps in the enormous reconstruction challenge.

On Saturday 4 June 2005 the traditional fund-raising party took place at the Brussels-base European School, organized by the voluntary association of schoolchildren’s parents, with the main aim of collecting money for selected charity projects that had been identified during the year.

The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Tsunami Recovery, Bill Clinton, met with the UNIC Director, Shalini Dewan, during his visit to India on 27 May.

The UN has also launched a new website to track the pledges for tsunami relief.
