Human Rights Day

 

UNIC Harare commemorated Human Rights Day on Monday 10 December 2007 through a Media Encounter. The aim of the media encounter was to bring together the media, government, civil society and non governmental organizations around a topical issue. At this event, the speakers were the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs who was represented by his Permanent Secretary and the UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Lare Sisay, representing the United Nations. The UNDP Deputy Representative read the statement of the United Nations Secretary General to mark this event and launched the year to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, while the Government gave a keynote address highlighting key issues pertaining to human rights in the country. UNIC Officer-in-Charge made the welcoming remarks.

The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Yaounde organised an Outreach event as proposed by UNIC Lagos for the Candle Lighting Campaign in support of Human Rights and Peace in Africa.

The event was held on Saturday, 8 December 2007, on the esplanade of the Yaounde Conference Centre. It was co-organised with a network of "Women of the Central African Region" known as "Wailing Women Worldwide," an inter-denomination women intercessory group praying for the church and the Nations, in existence since 1998. The group had members from Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, DRC, Congo Brazzaville, central African Republic present at the event. According to Ms Elisabeth Shu, the leader of the Wailing Women’s prayer network in Cameroon, "this initiative is a reminder of their fervent mission to pray and act for Peace and Human Rights worldwide and Africa in particular."

> An estimated total of 400 women, men and children attended the event which was brief but intense in prayer and song.

UNIC Yaounde

   

A special event was held on 10 December 2006 at the Women and Children Center in the capital, Baku, to mark the Human Rights Day, press service of the Azerbaijan Ombudsman Office said.

The event was organized by the Azerbaijan Ombudsman Office and United Nations Department of Public Information.

The country's Commissioner for Human Rights, Mrs. Elmira Suleymanova, spoke of the work done to protect human rights and freedoms in the country. Representative of the United Nations Department of Public Information in the UN Azerbaijan Office, highly appreciated the work done towards reducing poverty in Azerbaijan.

UNO Baku

   

To promote the Human Rights Day 2005, UNIC Bujumbura organized a media workshop on the theme "Combating Torture", in partnership with the Press House of Burundi. UNIC organized a discussion of the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, ratified by Burundi Government in 1987. 60 journalists participated in the workshop.

UNIC Bujumbura

   

On 10 December 2004, the Office of the Ombudsman of the Azerbaijan Republic organized a commemoration of Human Rights Day, with the support of the United Nations Office in Azerbaijan . The event included a round-table discussion focused on human rights issues. Among the participants were representatives of government bodies, international organizations, non-governmental organization (NGOs), as well as representatives from the media.

On December 9 2004, the UN Department of Public Information of Yerevan and the Club of Young Human Rights Advocates jointly organized a contest to mark Human Rights Day. The participants in the contest were 9 school-teams of Human Rights Advocates who made brief presenations about human rights, civil society and the rule of law.
