Various activities were held in Zambia to mark the World
Environment Day 2006, at which the youth were urged to play a
prominent role in the addressing the environmental challenges
faced by the country through deforestation, air pollution, land degradation
and waste management.
Director of Forestry in the Ministry of Environment,
Tourism and Natural Resources called on Zambia to move in line with
the International Convention on Bio-diversity and environmental protection during the celebrations held in Lusaka.

UNIC Dar Es Sala'am, in collaboration with Tanzania Youth Coalition organized
the commemoration of World Environment Day 2006. The guest of
honour was the mayor of Dar es Salaam.
The mayor stated that youthful leadership was a
key ingredient of radical change, and congratulated the youth
of Kijitonyama together with UNIC Dar Es Sala'am, for organizing World Environment Day 2006.

In observation of the World Environment Day,
on June 7 2006, UNIC Islamabad
held a press conference to announce the findings of a recent
survey on the population of the Indus River dolphins, a highly endangered species in Pakistan.
The survey was conducted
under the Pakistan Wetlands Programme, a joint initiative of UNDP, Royal Netherlands Embassy,
Global Environment Facility, Ministry of Environment and the World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan.
The survey found an increase in dolphin population from 2001.
