Madrid, Spain, 6 September 2006 - Statement by the Secretary-General on the agreement by the Israeli Government to lift the blockade of Lebanon

I am pleased that the Israeli Government has agreed to lift its blockade of Lebanon, effective 6pm Beirut local time tomorrow, Thursday, 7 September 2006.

The lifting of the blockade will enable Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and his Government to accelerate their economic recovery and reconstruction programme.

I would like to thank the governments which contributed to making this possible.

I will continue to exert every effort to secure the full implementation of Security Council resolution 1701, enabling the Government of Lebanon to extend its authority over its territory and to exercise its full sovereignty.
