UN legal counsel in Cambodia for talks on special court for Khmer Rouge

Hans Corell

13 March 2003 – The United Nations Legal Counsel, Hans Corell, met today with a senior Cambodian official in Phnom Penh to discuss the work programme for negotiations on the remaining parts of a draft agreement concerning the trial of Khmer Rouge leaders.

Mr. Corell also met for more than an hour with King Norodom Sihanouk, while Senior Minister Sok An was scheduled to meet later in the day with the full UN delegation, according to a UN spokesman.

Tomorrow, Mr. Corell is expected to meet with representatives from non-governmental organizations and then with Cambodia's Supreme Council.

The UN delegation's trip to Cambodia is expected to wrap up on 17 March, one day before Secretary-General Kofi Annan is due to report to the General Assembly on progress regarding the trials.

The meetings in Phnom Penh follow those held in January in New York when a Cambodian delegation led by Sok An met with Mr. Corell for a series of exploratory talks on the establishment of a special court to try the former Khmer Rouge leaders.
