HANS BLIX COMMENTS ON ENTERING THE BUILDING

9 January ... ABOUT SOME REPORTS THAT ARE CIRCULATING, THE FIRST ONE BEING THAT IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS YOU ARE PLANNING TO ASK SOME IRAQI SCIENTISTS TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY FOR INTERVIEWS IN CYPRUS

The question of interviews remains and the Council has given several options to carry out these interviews and we will make use of them. And I am sure there will interviews within the near future, but where and which mode, that is for us to decide what is appropriate in each case.

ONE OTHER... THAT IN THE PAST FEW DAYS, UNMOVIC HAS BEEN GETTING SIGNIFICANT INTELLIGENCE FROM THE UNITED STATES

We are getting intelligence from several sources and I will not go into the operative part of that, but it is clear that this will be helpful in the future to us. We have gone to, I think about 125 sites already and some of them were not visited before. And there will be more and as more intelligence comes in there will be more sites visited. I am confident that we will get more intelligence.

... AND QUALITY...

Well I am saying that I am satisfied that we will get intelligence.

...INAUDIBLE QUESTION. (BLIX OFF THE MIKE)

THERE IS A REPORT THAT WEAPONS INSPECTORS WILL SAY THAT THEY NEED SIX MORE WEEKS AFTER JANUARY 27 OR SPECIFIC AMOUNT EXTRA TIME YOU WILL ASK FOR.

For what?

You haven't read the resolution in that case. The resolution did not put a time limit of that kind. I have now been there for two months and been covering the country in ever wider sweeps and we haven't found any smoking guns. But we have been able to re-baseline more and more. And of course, if we were to find something dramatic we will report that immediately to the Security Council. If there were to be a breach of some kind, well that will be reported to the Council. But the resolution does not give any time limit for the inspections. ... You are thinking about the new resolution that was adopted last autumn, but there is another one from the end of 1999 which actually establishes UNMOVIC. And that foresees that we will define in due course which are the key remaining disarmament tasks and the Security Council will approve them. And then it will be for Iraq to try to satisfy those tasks. So February is not the end of time.

HAVEN'T FOUND A SMOKING GUN DOES THAT REALLY IN SOME WAY SHOW IRAQ IS NOT COOPERATING BECAUSE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO COME FORWARD AND REVEAL WHAT THEY HAVE AND THE FACT THAT YOU HAVEN'T FOUND IT IS THAT ACTUALLY INDICATION THAT THEY ARE NOT REALLY GOING ALONG...

Well I said on the 19 th of December, we think that the declaration fails to answer a great many questions which were clear in the .... report, and I will repeat that today even if the more profound the reading of the text that they confirms the impression that it... So Iraq may have more to say, I hope so.

SINCE DECEMBER 19TH THEY HAVEN'T COME FORWARD WITH ANY FURTHER INFORMATION TO CLEAR UP THOSE QUESTIONS

No, they have given us the report and list about names... I cannot say that we have found more....
