Ban names retired Dutch general to lead probe into South Sudan violence

23 August 2016 – United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today appointed Major General (retired) Patrick Cammaert of the Netherlands to lead an independent special investigation into the violence in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, in July 2016, and the response of the UN mission in the country (UNMISS).


Security Council extends UN mission in Cyprus for six months

26 July 2016 – The United Nations Security Council today extended the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for six months, until 31 January 2017, and welcomed the progress of the negotiations between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders to reach a comprehensive settlement.
