Established in 1957, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) serves as the world's foremost intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical co-operation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

The DPRK signed its first nuclear safeguards agreements with the IAEA in 1977. The country became party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in 1985, but withdrew in 2003.
