Purpose:

Promotion of sustainable development - hence emphasis on poverty eradication and environmental protection and awareness. Our projects are based in rural areas and therefore sustainable agricultural development as basis for sustainable human development is critical to all our approaches. Agriculture is the source of livelihood for most people, and therefore its proper harnessing is critical to ensure both food and income security at household level. But this should be done without destroying the resources that future generations will need for their needs.

Illustrative Project:

Through credit and micro-finance, rural women have started savings towards their own-input requirements as well as for income security. As an indigenous NGO with no external funding, our operations are hampered by shortage of funding. Nevertheless, we are currently the only NGO which is not sponsored but with a strong savings plan for participants in Zambia.

Purpose:

Providing socio-economic support to community based organizations in rural areas to enable them to attain household food security. HODI aims to provide logistical, technical, and financial support to enable programme implantation.

Illustrative Project:

Namwala Cattle Project: Farmers have been assisted in organizing cattle clubs for spraying livestock against ticks. Farmers selected by communities have been trained as para-vets. Each cattle club runs a revolving fund to access drugs and extension services. The project has encouraged two local traders to stock veterinary drugs. The farmers are now diversifying to other areas of socio-economic projects.

Illustrative Project:

Targeting about 2 million people a year, the network has executed relief food delivery programmes, mainly through food for work community participatory projects, for the past three droughts (1992/92, 1992/93 and 1994/95). There have been no reports in Zambia of hunger-induced deaths.

Purpose:

To provide temporary employment skills and credit to low-income groups in peri-urban, unplanned settlements, and to ensure food security in these areas. Also to facilitate the upgrading of settlements through infrastructure development, so that the upgrading of these settlements can be legalized and systematically planned.

Illustrative Project:

Creation of Employment - women have been engaged in the construction of infrastructure in the community such as roads, drains, refuse bins, and ventilated improved pit latrines. After being on the programme for almost three years, they have formed contractual groups and are now hired by the local community and the municipal councils. In the absence of contracts, they engage in entrepreneurial activities to raise money to feed their families.

Illustrative Project:

In 1991 undertook review of the climate for investment in SADC member countries in order to advise on deficiencies in the policy framework. This was followed by an international conference on mining in Southern Africa. The conference was attended by project promoters (from SADC) and investors from Europe, North America, and Japan. Ministers from SADC countries explained their policies aimed at attracting investment.

The organization has organized more than 500 women members in one of the more densely populated areas of the city. These women receive credit from WFCZ. Leadership training and capacity building imparted to the women have enabled their leaders to undertake the following: recruit new members into the organization; assist in preparing members to apply for loans, to receive loans; monitor groups loan repayments; arrange for a new branch office to be opened.

Under the Women's Human Rights Project, we cooperate with the police service who have since formed a new unit - the first ever in Zambia. This mainly targets victims of violence especially the elderly, children and women. It is responsive when dealing with these groups of people in instances such as domestic violence. This is now treated as a crime of violence, whereas in the past it was treated strictly as a family affair.

Small busines development/enterprise: ZFE has been involved in training displaced workers and those affected by the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) on how to start a business. About 140 potential entrepreneurs were trained between January and December 1997. Statistics from the impact evaluations carried out indicated that 24% have started businesses and have employed an average of 2 people in their businesses.

To facilitate the development of affordable and sustainable agricultural production for rural women farmers, thus reducing poverty levels and fighting hunger and malnutrition; to empower rural women farmers with training information, such as credit and saving schemes.

Illustrative Project:

Procured 50 hectares of land in Lukansa and accessed agricultural input loans without collateral; obtained a tractor from the credit scheme; held field days and demonstrations on varied aspects of food production; won the prestigious Women's World Summit Foundation Award.
