A group of youth numbering 30 were provided technical and other support which resulted in the group generating enough money from the project to pay reasonable salaries, being fully employed by the farm, employing temporary labor at different times of the year, obtaining accounting and management skills, obtaining and practicing marketing skills, diversifying activities including environmental conservation, ornamental plants, landscaping, decorations, etc.

The Rural Women Based Integrated Project (RWIP) is a locally driven resource management project aimed at helping women to undertake environmental improvement activities in 18 villages in the Ruvuma region. Tree nurseries have been created in all 18 villages, and 100 hectares of both communal and private land have been afforested. Communal vegetable gardens have also been created. The project is also used to demonstrate tree nursery establishment, soil conservation, agro-forestry, horticultural techniques and energy-efficient cooking stoves. Some groups have started income-generating activities.

Community sustainable development: Two of our volunteers assigned to 4 rural secondary schools in Uluguru; near Morogoro set up a piggery and dairy with the active involvement of various members of the commuity. Illustrative Project:

In 1995 we supported women political contenders and financed their campaigns. Eight of them were elected as constituency MPs. We also carried out democracy and voter education in three districts. Information generated there was used to produce information sheets, posters, and flyers which were used during the campaigns throughout the country to sensitize people. We also produced two popular booklets "Kwangu Wapi" (The girl child asking where do I belong), and "Kondom yazua Kasheshe" aimed at the youth and community to discuss sexuality and HIV/AIDS. TGNP's contribution has been recognized nationally.

Women Advancement Trust (WAT) promotes the advancement of women through education, skills training, research, entrepreneurship and information dissemination. Its key objectives are to create awareness of women's rights, to promote education on human settlements and environmental issues, to promote skills training for women, to advocate for gender sensitive policies, and to enhance self-reliance initiatives among women.

Illustrative Project:

WAT has carried out an educational campaign and lobbying programme on women's rights to access land and housing. It successfully lobbied for the inclusion of a clause barring the use of traditional laws and customs if they acted against the constitution and human rights within the national land policy. WAT led the 1997 women's day celebrations which focused on women's access to land ownership. Since then, WAT had organized four awareness-raising workshops and continues to work with the gender task force - a collective of NGO members that focuses on lobbying with regards to the land. The campaign will move to rural areas this year.
