We conducted law reform seminars in 1994 with assistance from DANIDA and the Ministry of Gender and Commuity Development. The emphasis was on domestic violence and rape - causes and  prevention. 350 persons attended the seminars which were held in 7 sub-counties. Research indicates reduced cases of domestic violence, and more rape/defilement cases are being reported.

To provide financial services to women micro-entrepreneurs under positive social interaction through a highly motivated staff.

Illustrative Project:

FINCA operates in 10 districts out of 39 in Uganda. 315 village banks where opened as of 30 November 1997, providing access to 10,069 women micro-entrepreneurs. Between September 1993 and November 1997 gross loans worth US$ 4,089,696 were disbursed.  So far US$ 522,610 have been mobilized to the benefit of the women and the economy in general. The outstanding portfolio currently stands at US$ 722.845. The average value per individual of all loans(US$ 107) and repayment rate (on time monthly) stands at 98.9%.

One of the objectives of GWODEO is to disseminate all types of information to the grassroot community. The Music, Dance and Drama Project was formed to simplify this task. Our purpose is the attainment of an economically viable, efficient, sustainable and member sensitive cooperative movement.

Since 1996 UCA has run a pilot project on village banks using a totally different approach whereby the community owns and manages the village bank, provides the necessary resources and uses its services. UCA only builds the capacity of the members and provides basic equipment and logistics to start off.

In one remote village of the country, a primary society has since undergone complete transformation into a village bank. As a result, deposits have grown by more than 500 percent, membership by 120 percent, and loan portfolio by 150 percent. In addition, the village bank has designed products which have attracted institutional members like schools, the local church, and other micro-enterprises. The experiment is now being replicated all over the country as an instrument to fight poverty.

Illustrative Project:

Conducting career guidance and counseling especially in girls schools. As a result, the number of girls enrolling for science and engineering undergraduate courses has increased tremendously in higher institutions of learning. Their performance in these courses has also improved and they excel better than boys.

WAYS is an indigenous organization formed by a group of Ugandans after a careful assessment of the plight of women and youth in Uganda and the need to uplift their standard of living.

Illustrative Project:

After the Beijing International Women's Forum in 1995, WAYS has carried out detailed field research on existing domestic laws, especially as they affect women in Uganda with the aim of presenting the government with raw data with which to revise such laws. Other fields of research have dealt with the problems of the girl child and retention of the girl child in school. WAYS has also established a reproductive health services centre in a rural community, addressing issues such as high infection of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and high maternal mortality rate.

To assist women and girls to participate in projects and programmes aimed at raising their educational, social, health and economic standards, thus playing a vital role in national development.

Illustrative Project:

YWCA offers courses which start with basic literacy, sewing and home craft as well as training that earn national diplomas and certificates. These include diplomas in business studies, hotel and institutional catering, secretarial services, dressmaking and designing, nursery teaching, computer science and languages such as English and French. Students who complete their courses are employed in hotels and industries, while others have become self-employed.
