We recently organized a regional curriculum development conference for the teaching and training in peace, conflict resolution, human rights and ethics for the Great Lakes Region. Illustrative Project:

We conducted law reform seminars in 1994 with assistance from DANIDA and the Ministry of Gender and Commuity Development. The emphasis was on domestic violence and rape - causes and  prevention. 350 persons attended the seminars which were held in 7 sub-counties. Research indicates reduced cases of domestic violence, and more rape/defilement cases are being reported.

Illustrative Project:

A research project that challenges the dominant assumption that poor people are in groups and therefore development actors want to reach the poor through groups. To provide financial services to women micro-entrepreneurs under positive social interaction through a highly motivated staff.

Illustrative Project:

FINCA operates in 10 districts out of 39 in Uganda. 315 village banks where opened as of 30 November 1997, providing access to 10,069 women micro-entrepreneurs. Between September 1993 and November 1997 gross loans worth US$ 4,089,696 were disbursed.  So far US$ 522,610 have been mobilized to the benefit of the women and the economy in general. The outstanding portfolio currently stands at US$ 722.845. The average value per individual of all loans(US$ 107) and repayment rate (on time monthly) stands at 98.9%.

One of the objectives of GWODEO is to disseminate all types of information to the grassroot community. The Music, Dance and Drama Project was formed to simplify this task. As a result, in 1996 during the International Women's Day celebrations, the group demonstrated foods and nutrition on children and how to control dehydration using local products.

Repackaging of information is a project which is proving very popular and successful. Proof-in-Print is a compilation of acts of violence against women as portrayed in the local media. The first issue published in 1996 was about  the different manifestations as conceptualized by civil society. The response to the booklet was phenomenal. Subsequent booklets have also been used widely as an advocacy tool against violence.
