Purpose:

To promote an environmentally sound and sustainable development of rural  youth, children and women in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa; to provide skills aquisition, job creation and environmentally sustainable enlightment for development.

Illustrative Project:

Skills aquisition/training of 100 rural youth drawn from over 7 communities within 3 States of Nigeria (Delta, Rivers, and Bayelsa). This training involved skills aquisition in carpentry, soap making, cloth weaving, modern methods of farming for improved yields, craft works, and computer skills. This is aimed towards sustainable self-employment, job creation and self-reliance among women and youth.

Balolongi Mobile Technical Training Institute

Purpose:

To create self-employment opportunities for both men and women residing in the rural areas of Swaziland. Our overall objective is to train men and women in the technical and business skills necessary to establish small commercial enterprises within their homes. This way, we establish a pool of skills which can assist rural development.

Illustrative Project:

In 1997, Balolongi trained 34 young men and women in metal works and buiding skills in northwest Swaziland. The trainees have formed groups and started their own businesses. Balolongi has thus created self-employment and capacity building by offering training.

Purpose:

To act in the case of armed conflict, internal strife and unrest, and in peace time. Prepare to act in all fields covered by the Geneva Convention on behalf of all war victims, both civilian and military; to contribute to the improvement of health through prevention of diseases and the mitigation of suffering with programmes that benefit the community; to organize within the scope of the National Plan; to provide emergency relief services to victims of disasters, howsoever caused; to disseminate and advocate for the respect and proper application of international humantiarian law; to promote the participation of youth in the work of the Red Cross.

Illustrative Project:

Health Care and HIV/AIDS Information - our organization manages three rural clinics for a population of about 30,000. Care provided is curative, promotive, and rehabilitative. These also include family planning, ante natal care, immunization, and home-based care for terminally ill patients. We also collect 3,000 units of safe blood each year.

Illustrative Project:

CANGO produces a regular newsletter known as NGO NEWS which is read by many NGO donor agencies, Governments, and the general public. This publication is used as a forum to share information on current events and new projects by member NGOs. From the Secretariat, the newsletter carries announcements for staffs of NGOs.

FUNDZA

Purpose:

IBFAN is a worldwide coalition of NGOs committed to the improvement of mother and child health through better infant nutrition and the promotion, protection and support of breast feeding.

Illustrative Project:

Training of trainers in the baby friendly hospital initiative (regional). This involves breast feeding management, policy on infant feeding, international code of marketing of breast milk substitutes, sharing technical information, consideration of issues related to breast feeding e.g. child care, child spacing (LAM); HIV/AIDS (mother to child transmission).

Kwasa Youth Club

Purpose:

To break down communication barriers between parents and children; to reduce the spread of AIDS aiming at young people; to reduce the crime rate among young people; to avoid immature sex, thus preventing teenage pregnancy; to reduce drug abuse and child abuse. 300 - 500 members.

Illustrative Project:

Counseling, cultural activities such as drama and poetry; beauty contests and fashion shows; recruitment of members in all regions of the country; improvement of the logistical and strategical function of the organization; training on leadership, management; and child rights; establishment of drop-in clinics for counselors; talk shows to fight against child abuse.

We have prepared new entrepreneurs to create plans to initiate viable businesses and demonstrate the ability to market and develop their products and services, as well as demonstrate practical business skills through a 'start your business' project finance, and 'improve your business' training programmes.

HIV/AIDS - Educating the communities, children below the ages of 14 and teenagers in high school, rural communities and working groups - especially those in industry. Through a community drama group we commissioned to stage shows in primary schools, high schools, industries and rural communities on the scourge of HIV/AIDS, aming to persuade them to change their ways of life. This is done countrywide.

Purpose:

We practice the ideals of ACWW. We share and care. We promote fellowship and encourage women to broaden their circle of friends, to be self-sufficient and to acquire income generating skills.

Illustrative Project:

We assisted the Pambile Bomake group of women up at Siketi to use the land given to them by the local chief. They had it fenced so that the cattle could not get to  the crops, bought seeds and planted crops to sell to the local community. This enabled them to become self-sufficient and to raise enough money to send their children to school.

Masibabisame Youth Maize Club

FLAS assists and supplements the activities of the Ministry of Health and other government agencies in the promotion of healthy family life and the creation of a sense of awareness of the importance of family health in all respects so that it becomes a way of life.  FLAS is a leader in the provision of high quality, innovative and sustainable family planning information.

Illustrative Project:

FLAS is involved in a variety of community-based services which include production of educational material on reproductive health issues; community meetings; community leader's seminars; training in the mapping of men and women of reproductive age; as well as seminars for men to encourage them to be involved in sexual and reproductive health matters.

The Youth Brigade of Swaziland

Purpose:

Yonge Nawe is a non-governmental organization dedicated to spreading environmental awareness throughout the kingdom of Swaziland. It seeks to bring about change in behavior sufficient to ensure a sustainable use of our natural resources through providing knowledge and encouraging active participation.

Illustrative Project:

We were part of a group that lobbied and pushed the Government to establish a Swaziland environment authority, which was set up in 1992. We now sit on its board and this body has the ultimate authority on all environmental issues. Through its establishment we are now able to carry out environmental assessments on all proposed projects. We are also hoping that through it we shall see environmental education becoming part of the formal school curriculum, as at the present moment our organization has to conduct all environmental awareness raising, education and training in a non-formal way.

Production of business materials; training courses for self-employment (80 trainees); loan schemes (27 participants provided with loans) monitoring of 5 projects; developing international partnerships between voluntary organizations, the private sector and the government.

Zondle Women's Organization

Purpose:

To promote the education and welfare of under priviliedged Swazi children.

Illustrative Project:

The organisation has to date successfully trained ten university graduates, three nurses, ten teachers, three mechanics, one builder, five officers in financial institutions and others in gainful employment.
