Illustrative Project:

From 1991 to 1997 the Gambia Women's Finance Association has disbursed more than 2 million dalasis as micro-enterprise loans to finance more than 3,500 micro-enterprises operations in different economic sectors. From 1994 to 1997 GAWFA collected more than 850,000 dalasis as savings from over 8,000 clients.

The aim of the Pan African Islamic Human Development Programme, formerly Pan African Islamic Society,  is to contribute effectively to the progress and needs of the people and the Government through agriculture, education, health and relief programmes.

Illustrative Project:

The organisation has contributed to the education, health and agriculture programmes of the nation. Regarding education, seven primary schools which were opened in 1986, have been handed over to the community as government national schools. In-service training courses have been organised in the past for teachers. In agriculture, farmers have benefitted from agro-inputs.

People in Action focuses primarily on food security and environmental degration. This non-profit organisation has training and implementation programmes on food security, environmental management, sustainable livelihood, forest management, and women's empowerment. It also organises community workshops. As yet, only a small part of People in Action's efforts have been aimed at conflict prevention and resolution activites, namely in the area of training.

Illustrative Project:

This agency implemented a community forest/woodlot programme in one of its areas of operation. The objective was to reduce erosion, and to increase farm production through the provision of compost to reduce the dependency on chemical fertilizers, which is unaffordable by  most farmers.
