Primary School Project at Laga Taffo area: ADAA together with the community of Lago Taffo established a primary school in 1992. This school has been annually up-graded and reached a complete primary level (grade 8) in 1996. Currently 487 students (86% male and 44% female) have been enrolled and there is a teaching staff of 8. The quality of education provided by the school as well as its low drop-out rate is exemplary in the region.

To build and strengthen the human resource base of the Amhara Region through financing and implementing literacy, primary education, primary health care, vocation skills and small business development programs of the region.
Illustrative Project:
The Amhara Development Association has three vocational training centres. Each training centre has a capacity to train 240 persons at a time. The training centres provide the trainees with accomodation services including food, dormitory, health care and pocket money. The Association has trained 187 females and 1215 males in masonry and 58 females, 464 males in carpentry. According to the 1997 post-training evaluation survey made by the Regional Bureau of Social Affairs, 61% of the trained persons are currently employed or self employed, 14% are seasonally unemployed and 25% are not yet employed.

To support orphan and destitute children, women and elders by providing food, medicine and other materials necessary for survival; to provide training for destitute families and to create employment opportunities.
Illustrative Project:
Our current project plans to train 70 men and 30 women every three months in a variety of skills; fishing, metalwork, woodwork, painting, carpet-making, soap and candle-making, weaving, and fish-net making. From December 1995 up to February 1998, 385 destitute men and women have received different skills training and all of them are able to generate personal income. 138 orphans and destitute children have been given the opportunity to attend pre-school and are being provided with food, clothes and school material.

Zeghe Community Development Project: This project targets coffee growers and fishery groups whose livelihoods were threatened by lack of water and appropriate fishing gear. Document and identify torture victims, their families and the families of the deceased because of torture; carry out needs assessment of victims; provide medical assistance; educational support and vocational training; carry out self-help projects, i.e. establish income generating activities; create public awareness about the dehumanizing and deprivating effects of torture.
Illustrative Project:
Treatment is offered to both primary and secondary national victims of torture. The treatment includes both physical and psychological care. So far 75 victims have been treated and hearing aids have been provided for four victims. Efforts to provide vocational training for victims have included training them in running grain mills. A workshop on 'The challenges and responses to the plight of victims of torture' has been organized, as well as a seminar for health professionals.

Established the Integrated Rural Project in North Wollow where two schools and clinics were built. The project also raises 1.5 million tree seedlings annually and distributes them to farmers. About 150 ha of land has been closed off for natural forest regeneration and soil enriching trees have also been planted. The project has developed 2 springs, dug 2 wells, constructed latrines, and trained 23 traditional birth attendants and community health workers who are currently serving their communities.

The first phase of the project culminated in December 1996 by publishing a book "Important Bird Areas in Ethiopia: A First Inventory" - the first to be published in Africa. The Society has taken the IBA process further through a collaborative working relationship with the Norwegian Ornithological Society. This work focuses on a study of particular species of birds, water birds and on the perception of local communities regarding biodiversity conservation, particularly birds.

Prepared a colloquium on the "Challenges of HIV/AIDS, in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia from 4-6 January 1999. The Colloquium considered the impact of the Addis epidemic on poverty and was organized in collaboration with eminent scientists in the field of HIV/AIDS.

Twenty micro-enterprises with 60 workers and about a total of 100 dependants have been organized. $2,000 have been provided as financial assistance to members from grants obtained from the Trickle Up Program based in New York. Assist children with heart disease get proper diagnosis, treatment and follow-up, both at home and abroad. Indicate rheumatic heart disease prevention programme; establish or be instrumental for the establishment of institutions that would cater services for children with heart disease.
Illustrative Project:
Several attempts have been made to create public awareness and mobilize public support. So far 1824 members are registered, substantial amount of money is solicited locally on fund raising events. A good working relationship is established with humanitarian organizations in USA, Europe and Israel. 261 cardiac patients were assisted to get surgical treatment free of charge. 85 of them were operated here in Ethiopia by medical teams from Spokane, USA who brought necessary medical equipment with them. They came 4 times within the last 5 years and stayed here in Addis Ababa for 7 days (5 operations per day) each time and operated on 85 children (closed and open heart surgery).

Illustrative Project:
We have organized 140 women (most of them are household heads) into a saving and credit cooperative. The members of the cooperative are involved in small business (private) by taking loans from the cooperative. The members have now established themselves. They support themselves and their family members by engaging in productive employment. They have established a solid institution/cooperative whose capacity to support its members has grown over the years. It is a financial and social institution which supports the members.
