Purpose:
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) coordinates development in the Horn of Africa. Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda are member states. It has established the following priorities: infrastructure development; food security; environmental protection; conflict prevention, management and resolution; and humanitarian affairs reflecting the need to establish peace and security to assure economic development. IGAD leaders have pursued negotiations to end the civil wars in Sudan and Somalia and given priority to the development of an early warning mechanism for the IGAD region.

Primary Health Care promotion and environmental protection; promotion of the basic education system. Contribution to the promotion of women's participation in the community; research the value of natural resources; encourage inter-regional and international exchanges.
Illustrative Project:
Since 1996 the organization has run a project concerned with the integration of young school dropouts (15 or 16 years old) who haven't finished inter-mediate school. After a year of class, the organization provides training in basis skills such as hairdressing, tailoring, and how to be a mechanic or electrician.
