Purpose:
The objective of ALMUA is to combat the poverty, destitution and intellectual, economic and social deprivation of the Angolan people; offer guidance to and train youth in various areas of social, professional, technical, cultural, athletic and recreational life; provide assistance to the needy; build mosques, rehabilitation centres for the disabled, orphanages, medical centres and children's schools; and defend human, particularly children's rights.

ALMUA is involved in the establishment of centres, cooperatives and vocational training schools and also carries out activities in the areas of agriculture; general and cultural education; water purification; literacy; and humanitarian and health assistance.

Search for Common Ground in Washington USA has established an Angolan office, which operates from the premise that only when Angolans experience reconciliation in their daily lives can there be a sustainable peace. The Centre carries out five programmes: dialogue between government and UNITA supporters in various social settings; conflict resolution, capacity building and training for NGOs and Angolan institutions; production of reconciliation radio and TV; journalistic exchanges to encourage reporters on both side to cooperate on shared productions; and production and mass distribution of the Angolan Peace Song.

FONGA stands for Forum of Angolan Non-Governmental Organizations. It has 150 member organisations. FONGA aims to play a facilitating role by organising workshops and seminars on community development and conflict resolution. Despite the difficulties and dangers of working in an area ravaged by civil war, FONGA continues to maintain local peace-building efforts.
Illustrative Project:
In March 1997, FONGA co-operated with American Friends Service Committee in training workshop for community workers representing about thirty NGOs. The workshop focused on nonviolent means of conflict resolution at the community level.
