Non-governmental Organizations (NGO) Directory

In 1999, the Office of Special Coordinator for Africa and Least Development Countries (OSCAL) which was the predecessor of the current Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA), published the first edition of the Directory of African NGOs.  The Directory contains regularly updated information by country and theme. The revised, second edition in 2003 reaffirmed the need to strengthen relationships among civil society groups, governments, and the international community; the importance of both local and global networking; and the need to reduce dependency on foreign resources. There were 3,500 NGOs listed in the third edition in 2004.

The Directory is part of the United Nation’s ongoing efforts to improve collaboration and facilitate information exchange among civil society organizations (CSOs), as well as with other development partners. The Directory informs and promotes a vibrant civil society in Africa, through which listed groups may learn from each other’s successes, strengthen their own local institutions, and network effectively for sustainable development.
