UN-INSTRAW congratulates Dr. Inés Alberdi, the new Executive Director of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and former member of the UN-INSTRAW Executive Board from 1989 until 1998, wishing her success in her endeavours.

Gender, Remittances and Development: Preliminary Findings from Selected SADC Countries, published by UN-INSTRAW and the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), with support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), highlights the growing impact of women's migration on households, families and communities in selected countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Fahmida Mirza, representative of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), was elected Speaker of the National Assembly. She is the first woman to occupy this post in Pakistan's history. With 249 of a possible 342 votes from lower house of the National Assembly, Miza is the sixteenth Parliamentary, taking over from Chaudhry Amir Hussain of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid. Within the framework of the Project "Strengthening governance with a gender perspective and the political participation of women at the local level in Latin America" of UN-INSTRAW, the workshop entitled "Challenges and Opportunities for a Greater Participation of Women in Local Governments in Latin America", was held on 17-19 march 2008 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
