Desk Study on the Environment in Iraq
Published by United Nations Envrionment Programme
Lessons learned from earlier conflicts indicate that environmental consequences in Iraq must be addressed as soon as possible to avoid further deterioration of humanitarian and environmental conditions. This publication provides an overview of chronic and war-related environmental issues and identifies the steps needed to safeguard against them using post-war Iraq as a case study. Environmental concerns addressed include: water and power supply, sanitation, and possible pollution from war-damaged sites. The study also reveals general background information for future work on the environment in Iraq.

Mobile Populations and HIV/AIDS in the Southern African Region: Desk Review and Bibliography on HIV/AIDS and Mobile Populations

Mobile Populations and HIV/AIDS in the Southern African Region: Desk Review and Bibliography on HIV/AIDS and Mobile Populations
Published by International Organization for Migration
By far the world’s worst affected region, sub-Saharan Africa is home to 70 percent of the total 42.9 million people living with HIV/AIDS globally. Since the start of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Southern African Development Community (SADC) has been concerned that the movement of people between countries is a major factor in the spread of HIV. To evaluate the overall impact of HIV/AIDS on eight mobile groups in eight SADC countries, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in consultation with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) carried out this study. The mobile groups reviewed are: military personnel, transport workers, mine workers, construction workers, agricultural workers, agricultural farm workers, informal traders, domestic workers, and refugees/internally displaced people. The countries included in this study are: Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Social Safety Nets for Women Social Safety Nets for Women
Published by United Nations Economic & Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific
This study from the Economic and Social Commission of Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) examines social protection systems and crisis-designed social safety nets in six Asian countries. A primary question in this study is whether the initiatives to mitigate the shocks of the crisis adequately reflect the different circumstances of women and men in the labor force and society in general. Attention is paid to governments’ attempts to target women as recipients of social safety net programmes and to the role of women in informal social safety nets activities. The study is divided into the following sections: Chapter 1 is an overview. Chapters II through VII present country studies on China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Republic of Korea. A conclusion offers proposed recommendations.
