The State of the World's Refugees: Fifty Years of Humanitarian Action
Refugees and other displaced people are the victims of events beyond their control: persecution, armed conflict, and human
rights violations. The problem remains a major concern of the international community in the 21st century. This publication
examines the major refugee crises of the last 50 years and the changing nature of international responses to the problem of
forced displacement. It describes the development of international refugee law and the establishment of institutions devoted to the protection of refugees and other displaced people. Looking at the challenges of the 1990s, it also
examines the population shifts in the former Soviet region, the Kurdish exodus from northern Iraq following the Gulf war, the restrictive asylum policies in Europe and North America, and the recent crises in the Balkans, the Great Lakes region of
Africa, East Timor and the Caucasus. Published by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the publication also emphasizes the need to find lasting solutions to problems of forced displacement. Without human security, it argues, there can be no peace and stability.

The State of World Population 2000: Lives Together, Worlds Apart : Men and
Women in a Time of Change
Despite the tremendous changes of the 20th century,
discrimination and violence against women and girls remain
firmly rooted in cultures around the world. This year's Report
looks at the gender inequality - the restrictions placed on
women's reproductive choices and how it affects their health,
education, social and economic participation. The publication
also explores women's rights as human rights, gender violence
and the role of men in reproductive health decisions. The
Report acknowledges the role of governments in creating
conditions for gender equality, but points out that in the end,
different societies need their own solutions to provide a
better life for both women and men. This annual also provides
easily accessible tables and data representing trends and
statistics for world population.

Breaking the Earthenware Jar: Lessons from South Asia to End Violence
Against Women and Girls
Breaking the Earthenware Jar is a story of courage and hope. The incidence of domestic violence in South Asia is among the highest in the world, and the efforts of "activists" against it are compelling and instructive. This book turns spotlight on disturbing trends in the region, and poses challenging questions about selective female foeticide, child neglect and abuse, beating in pregnancy and "honour killings". This publication offers an opportunity to re-examine assumptions about family, about care of children, about respect for women and girls and their human rights. It invites open-minded consideration of problems that appear to exist, with public debate about changes needed, and how to bring them about.

Kosovo and the Challenge of Humanitarian Intervention: Selective
Indignation, Collective Action, and International Citizenship
The Kosovo conflict has the potential to redraw the landscape
of international politics, with significant ramifications for
the UN, major powers, regional organizations, and the way in
which we understand and interpret world politics. Can the veto
now effectively be circumvented to launch selective enforcement
operations? Can the humanitarian imperative be reconciled with
the principle of state sovereignty? This publication offers
interpretations of the Kosovo crisis from numerous
perspectives: the conflict-parties, NATO allies, and the
immediate region surrounding the conflict. Country perspectives
are followed by scholarly analyses of the longer-term
normative, operational and structural consequences of the
Kosovo crisis for world politics.
