The purpose of this publication is to explain and clarify the Aarhus Convention - Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters - and thereby help to involve citizens more effectively in the crucial collective search for sustainable development. The Aarhus Convention, which was adopted in 1998, is a new kind of environmental agreement, linking environmental rights and human rights. It acknowledges that we owe an obligation to future generations, links government accountability and environmental protection and forges a new process for public participation in the negotiation and implementation of international agreements.
