Women in Transition

The countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union are going through immense changes, and the people who are most affected by these changes are the women and children of the region.

This publication provides information on the social and economic trends affecting children and families in the region. This year's report gives a special focus on the experiences of girls and women during the transition. It highlights the role of women in regional progress and the obstacles they face.

Women in Transition covers a broad range of issues, including women's participation in the emerging market economy and democratic governments, female access to health and education, trends in family formation and violence against women and girls. The statistical annex presents data on 27 transition countries and includes 130 indicators on social and economic trends.
