Accessing the Canopy: Assessment of
Biological Diversity and Microclimate of the Tropical Forest Canopy: Phase
I
Tropical forest canopies are thought to contain the greatest species diversity
on earth, however, little is known about them. This report summarizes the
studies of a tropical forest canopy facilitated by the use of a construction
tower crane. This crane has been permanently installed in a tropical forest
for the exclusive and long-term use of scientists. Studies include examinations
of biodiversity, biotic interactions, energy exchange, microclimate and
its effects on plant responses to variation in carbon dioxide and ultra-violet
radiation.
