Poverty and the Environment: Reconciling
Short-term Needs with Long-term Sustainability Goals
Few aspects of development are so complex as the need to reconcile anti-poverty
and pro-environment goals. It is difficult to understand the interlinkages
between poverty, environment, population growth and development. This publication
brings environmental perspectives to bear on the quandaries and questions
that had dominated the World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen.
It elaborates on an integrated approach to sustainable development which
has the key criterion of meeting the needs of the least advantaged and most
vulnerable members of society.
