This study begins with a look at the well-known Ashio Copper Mine pollution case, one of modern Japan's first and most devastating environmental disasters; the country's worst pollution incident in the post-war period, the mercury poisoning in Minamata, whose victims are still on the increase today, is also covered in depth. Two other major incidents of the post-war period are detailed and in addition to these specific cases, an overall analysis of the social, economic, political and technological factors relevant to industrial pollution is provided.
